The Academy of Performing Arts at 120 Main Street has been a mainstay in Orleans for many years. The building was built in 1873 and served as the town hall until it became a theater. The 252 foot granite Pilgrim Monument commemorates the landing of the Mayflower Pilgrims in 1620 in Provincetown, where they stayed for five weeks before moving to Plymouth, Ma. The Monument was complet- ed in 1910 and dedicated by President William Howard Taft. The spectacular view from the top takes in the Provincetown Harbor, Cape Cod Bay and the Atlantic Ocean and, on very clear days, Plymouth, and the Boston skyline. The Museum offers exhibits on local history – highlighting the arrival of the Pilgrims, Provincetown’s rich maritime history, the early days of American theatre, and the building of the Monument.
